1. Working Load Calculation Formula
When the free length, stiffness, and initial tension of a spring are known, the load at a specific working length can be calculated using the following formula:
P = (R×F) + I.T.
Where:
P: Load (pounds)
R: Spring stiffness (pounds per inch)
F: Deformation relative to the free length (inches)
I.T.: Initial tension (pounds)
Example:
Given a free length of 1.000 inch, a stiffness of 6.9 pounds per inch, and an initial tension of 0.7 pounds, calculate the load when the working length is 1.500 inches.
Spring stiffness refers to the load required to produce unit deformation of the spring, which can be determined through the following steps:
Compress the spring to approximately 20% of the maximum deformation (maximum deformation = free length - solid height), and measure the load P1 and spring length L1 at this point.
Continue compressing the spring so that its deformation does not exceed 80% of the maximum deformation, and measure the load P2 and spring length L2.
Note: In the L2 state, no two coils (except the closed ends) shall be in contact with each other.
Calculate stiffness R (pounds per inch):
R = (P2 - P1) / (L1 - L2)
